A Piece of the Berlin Wall at the Hoover Museum

A warm, sunny November day only two days before Thanksgiving -- well now, that's something to be thankful for. Southeast Polk students headed out, on this day, to the Hoover Museum and Library and to Kalona, Iowa, on a luxurious charter bus! And what was accomplished?

This bus load of students, staff, and parents learned about
Iowa's economy
Iowa's history
Iowa's people
Iowa's culture and traditions
Iowa's beautiful farm lands and prairies
Global issues and connections
and more....

It was as though, we traveled through time, stopping briefly into the past, present, and future! New friendships were made. Everyone had a good time. These students warmed the hearts of the people they came in contact with, as well. Southeast Polk students, you rock!

I liked to see things that represent the life of President Hoover. One of the favorite things of Mr. Hoover was fishing. On the exibition are two places that showed the President fishing. The second thing was the Bible that he read when he lived with his parents. The last thing was a pencil with the face of Mr. Hoover on the eraser. The pencil was used on the promotion of his campaign.

The thing that I enjoyed most on the field trip was the Kalona Bakery. I enjoyed it because they have all kinds of different cakes, pies, cookies, and many other foods. I bought some of the cookies and took them home to share with my siblings. They all liked the cookies too. Also, my grandmother liked the cookies because they are delicious. All the students were walking around the small stores beside the Kalona Bakery. We all had a good time during this field trip.

The day, I went to the cheese factory and saw how they make cheese, the cheese was so delicious just by watching them make it. At first, the cheese makers put tons of milk into the machine, and the machine seperated the milk into curds and whey. Next, all I could remember is the white solid cheese in that machine, the big machine blend the cheese, to make it more even.

My favorite place through out this field trip is at Kalona. I really like this place because it's so quiet and people live very peacefully. The people in Kalona seem really nice too. It's very nice to walk around the stores and see what people are selling. It's a small town but the view is very nice. When I was at Kalona I feel really calm. The wind blowing and the smell of the things people sell in Kalona is just very peaceful. I want to go there again if I get a chance.

The weather could not have been better. How lucky could we have been to get sunshine and jacket weather so late in November?
It was a great pleasure for me to get to know more Southeast Polk students and for students on my roster to see the diverse cultures that exist within Iowa.
This trip fell perfectly with the ninth grade studies of the Great Depression in their US History class. Students were given a different perspective on the presidency of Herbert Hoover and could learn about his great accomplishments.
